On Saturday, January 25, 2003, Jack Layton became the federal leader of the New Democratic Party. But, that morning, before the one and only ballot, some fascinating events took place. Pierre Ducasse offered an electric campaign speech that few of us expected from this interesting young man who came from Quebec to challenge the leaders in this race. But it captured and held our attention, and left us breathless with its honesty. Finally, Jack Layton offered his speech to the delegates of the Convention. He spoke quietly of his thoughts about how things are in Canada, and his hopes for the future. Jack Layton's speech was the last offering to the delegates. And so, the delegates waited at the finish line, waiting for the results of the first ballot. But nobody seriously expected the first ballot to also be the final ballot. That quickly, the National Leadership Convention of the NDP had elected its next federal leader, who offered his appreciation to the membership of the New Democratic Party for his election. . . and began the work of his mandate. The National Leadership Convention is over. We have a new leader we can all be proud of, no matter who we each supported. Our leadership candidates, all of them remarkable people and competent. Take another look at their web sites, and watch for them on CPAC. Canada has not seen or heard the last of these people. Candidates' WebSites So . . . it's finally over. These are the candidates' web sites. Since some of the candidates are members of the caucus, their web sites may remain on the internet in order to serve their constituents. Other web sites may eventually be discontinued. In the meantime, browse through them, and remember the excitement of Convention Weekend, and some of the memorable events we witnessed there. And don't forget the Canadian Political Action Channel (CPAC), which will continue to host interesting, informative, and challenging programs about Canadian politics in this country and in the world.
